Sisters Giving Back was founded in 2011 by a group of like-minded women who shared a dream to make a difference in the lives of African American young ladies. Our goal is to improve the lives of young women and girls, through positive role-modeling to afford them the opportunities to reach their educational goals.
For the first time in the history of data collection by the National Center of Education Statistics as reported by the US Census, African Americans have surpassed all groups in college entrance based upon race and gender. We also know that it has been increasingly difficult for our youth to meet the financial obligations to earn a college degree. As a community it is our responsibility to support our youth in their journey to obtain their educational goals.
Sisters Giving Back holds several fundraising events throughout the year to raise money for our youth conferences and annual scholarship awards. These events provide a chance to not only raise money but help build a community of people consistently giving back to the next generation of leaders.
Three recipients each year are awarded a scholarships to apply towards college. To be eligible the recipients must be enrolling at a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student in the fall. Scholarships are awarded at our Annual Black Tie Scholarship Gala every spring.
We hold an annual Teen Girls Conference at Temple University in Philadelphia every October providing workshops focusing on confidence, fashion, and social media. The girls participate in skits and other activities that boost self-esteem, self-confidence, and encourage public speaking.
Sisters Giving Back officers and members donate their time and talent to the organization, there are no paid staff or administrative fees. 100% of donations and fundraising proceeds directly benefit the target population.
Education remains one of the black community’s most enduring values, sustained by the belief that freedom and education go hand in hand.
